Plant of the week: Porcelain Vine

Porcelain Vine: Ampelopsis brevipedunculata

Family: Vitaceae

Hardiness: Zone 4-8

Cultural requirements: full sun, to part shade, well-drained soil, trellis or other support. The vine is self-pollinating.

This vigourous, and invasive in warmer climates, vine is adaptable to many locations, seen here growing under the canopy of a Manitoba Maple and surrounded by lemon thyme. It has dense foliage, and is primarily known for its berries.

The berries are produced in early fall, and are in shades of blue and purple; the different shades are found within each cluster. For those living in areas with early frosts, the berry display can be short-lived.

A popular cultivar is 'Elegans' with highly variegated leaves and a more compact habit.
